Lane Fox Respiratory Service

Lane Fox Respiratory Service

Lane Fox weaning, rehabilitation and home mechanical ventilation service

Lane Fox Respiratory Unit Service is a super-specialist respiratory service that supports both the acute and long-term management of patients with sleep disordered breathing, chronic respiratory failure and pulmonary hypertension. Currently, there are over 2200 patients managed in the Lane Fox Respiratory Service. With 34 beds and purpose built outpatient facilities, Lane Fox is the largest weaning, rehabilitation and home ventilation service in the UK serving south London and the south east of England. Lane Fox Respiratory Unit Service has built a national and international reputation and our vision is to ensure all patients with chronic respiratory failure are able to access super-specialty care.

We provide inpatient weaning and rehabilitation services to those patients who cannot successfully be liberated from invasive ventilation following critical illness.

We provide inpatient and outpatient home mechanical ventilation treatment for patients with chronic respiratory failure resulting from a variety of causes such as:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • neuromuscular disease and chest wall disease (for example Duchenne muscular dystrophy, motor neuron disease and scoliosis)
  • chronic respiratory failure related to obesity.

We provide a comprehensive service for those suffering from the late consequences of poliomyelitis including expert rehabilitation and orthotic support and a post-polio rehabilitation programme.

We are unique in the UK as we provide a 24-hour medical, nursing and technical back-up service for assisting patients who are experiencing difficulty in the home environment.

We aim to deliver high-quality, coordinated, multi-disciplinary care from inpatient to long-term outpatient management, with the vision to develop a network of fully integrated technical, medical, nursing and therapy teams that delivers clinical, research and educational excellence to support our complex respiratory patients.

Partnership with REMEO

The Lane Fox Respiratory Service joined with REMEO Ltd, a subsidiary of the Active Care Group, and in 2014 opened a 20-bedded weaning, rehabilitation and home ventilation centre on the East Surrey Hospital site. This novel public-private partnership allows clinical care to be delivered to more patients with chronic respiratory failure under the care of the Lane Fox Respiratory Service.

Clinical research

Research underpins our activities and informs our patient, carer and staff educational programmes. The research service is housed in the Lane Fox Clinical Respiratory Physiology Centre, part of the King's College London School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences, and the translational science programme is focussed on three themes of admission prevention in COPD, prevention of skeletal muscle wasting during critical illness and clinical trials to improve long term outcome in patients with sleep disordered breathing and chronic respiratory failure. The Lane Fox Respiratory Service ensures life-long support for patient.

We have an active clinical research programme, including the Lane Fox PhD research programme, led by Professor Nicholas Hart, Professor Joerg Steier and Dr Patrick Murphy, supported by our clinical trials team.
