Introduction:

Sutter Health, with a 120-year legacy of serving Northern California, has announced a transformational plan to expand access to its high-quality, integrated care across the greater East Bay region.

Features:

Sutter Health has announced a transformative $ 1 billion investment to expand healthcare services across the East Bay, ensuring comprehensive care access within a 15-minute drive for local communities. Central to this initiative is the newly acquired 12-acre Sutter Emeryville Campus, which will house a state-of-the-art regional ambulatory care complex and a new medical center designed for up to 200 beds, with room for future expansion.

Spanning approximately 1.3 million square feet, the Sutter Emeryville Campus will integrate advanced outpatient and inpatient services, including specialty care clinics, imaging, laboratory, urgent care, ambulatory surgery, and dedicated centers for neuroscience, orthopedics, and women’s health. The campus will also provide medical office space and ample parking.

The phased development will commence with the opening of the Sutter Health Cancer Center in November 2026 and the first ambulatory services in 2028. The new medical center is expected to open by 2032-2033, replacing acute care services currently offered at the Ashby Avenue campus in Berkeley. The Ashby site will be repurposed to include an ambulatory surgery center, urgent care clinic, and potentially skilled nursing services, further strengthening Sutter’s integrated care network in the East Bay.

Key Features of the Sutter Emeryville Campus

  • Ambulatory Care Complex: Offering hospital-based outpatient clinics in neuroscience, rheumatology, pulmonary, dermatology, non-chemotherapy infusion, orthopedic care, physical therapy, ophthalmology, women's health, pediatrics, digestive diseases and surgery, OB/Gyn graduate medical education, urology, ENT, audiology, endoscopy, urgent care, imaging, and laboratory services. Ambulatory services are expected to begin in 2028.
  • Destination Specialty Centers: Featuring advanced centers for neuroscience, orthopedics, women’s health, primary care, urgent care, imaging, and other specialties.
  • Medical Center Expansion: A 335,000 sq. ft. facility with up to 200 beds, including labor and delivery, neonatal ICU, intensive care unit (ICU), emergency services, imaging, operating rooms, and private patient rooms. The hospital is set to open in 2032-2033 and will replace acute care services at Sutter’s Ashby Avenue location in Berkeley. The Berkeley campus will be repurposed for ambulatory surgery, urgent care, and potentially skilled nursing services.
  • Sutter Health Cancer Center: Set to open in November 2026, enhancing oncology care access in the region.
  • Clinician Growth: The campus will house approximately 190 primary and specialty care providers to support the growing demand for integrated healthcare services in the East Bay.
