Introduction:

The Houston County Health Care Authority (HCHCA) has recently greenlit a significant $50 million expansion for Southeast Health Medical Center in response to the rising demand for emergency medical services and increasing patient volumes.

Features:

In fiscal year 2023, the Emergency Department at Southeast Health served 53,110 patients. This year, patient volume has surged by 8 percent, and projections estimate approximately 58,000 visits. As the region’s sole Level II Trauma Center, Chest Pain Center, and one of only three Comprehensive Stroke Centers in the state, Southeast Health plays a critical role in emergency care.

The expansion project, which spans four phases and is projected to cost just over $25 million, will include:

  • An addition of 21,300 square feet to the Emergency Department, along with the renovation of 16,700 existing square feet.
  • An increase in treatment spaces from 32 to 66, enabling the department to handle up to 75,000 visits per year.
  • Relocation of the Southeast Medicine Shop to a more accessible storefront location within the lobby.
  • Installation of a new CT Scanner and satellite Laboratory to enhance patient flow and operational efficiency.
  • Creation of a dedicated safe treatment area for Behavioral Health Patients.
  • Expansion of the waiting area to accommodate seating for 100 patients and visitors.

Additionally, the project will feature the construction of two new patient floors above the Emergency Department, involving an investment of over $24.5 million. This multi-story tower will introduce 52 new inpatient hospital beds.

Southeast Health will initiate the process by submitting a Certificate of Need (CON) application to the state healthcare review board. The review process is expected to take around 120 days. Upon CON approval, construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2027.
