Renal and Transplant Medicine

We are a regional centre for people with all forms of kidney disease in south east London, Kent and the surrounding areas.

We offer treatment to patients at all stages of the kidney disease pathway. This ranges from diagnosis of early kidney disease through to caring for patients with all forms of advanced kidney disease, including dialysis, kidney transplantation and end of life care.

We have become leaders in the field of kidney care since our kidney services were established in the 1970s and are nationally recognised as having particular expertise in kidney transplantation.

This section gives information about your kidneys, our My Kidney website and the services we provide, both in our hospitals and in units in the south east of England.

About your kidneys

Your kidneys are located at the back of your body, below your ribs. They provide many functions, including filtering your blood to make urine, controlling your blood pressure and making new red blood cells. If your kidneys are not working properly some or all of these functions may be affected.

Chronic kidney disease or CKD means that your kidneys are not working properly. Chronic means it is long term.

About kidney disease - the My Kidney website

Visit the My Kidney website for more information about chronic kidney disease, the stages of kidney disease and possible treatment options. The website also contains advice about lifestyle issues and brings you news and research updates from Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospitals.

Having a kidney transplant

A transplant surgeon talks about the different types of kidney transplants. Patients tell us about their experiences and explain how having a transplant has benefited them.
