The Eurasian Orthopedic Forum brought together over 6,000 participants from 70 countries

7 July 2021

On 25-26 June 2021, the Third Eurasian Orthopedic Forum — the largest event in traumatology, orthopedics and healthcare economics — was held in Moscow. Approximately 2,000 civil and military medical professionals from the CIS, Asia-Pacific, South Asia, Middle East and Europe attended the forum, while others watched the presentations online. The EOF-2021 featured sessions of specialized international trauma and orthopedic societies, an exhibition of medical devices and equipment manufacturers, workshops for trauma and orthopedic surgeons, and signing of important cooperation agreements.

The two-day event attracted some 2,000 participants, even with all the COVID-19 restrictions. More than 4,000 people watched the Forum online. This hybrid format ensured that even those speakers who were prevented from traveling to Moscow for EOF-2021 due to the anti-pandemic measures, took part in the Forum, making sure the academic and business agenda is unaffected by the restrictions. Today, over 400 hours of unique recorded video content is available to all forum participants on the event’s official website https://2021.eoforum.ru/.

EOF 2021 hosted participants from 70 countries online and offline: Russia, Austria, USA, Switzerland, Moldova, Italy, Kazakhstan, Germany, South Korea, Portugal, UK, France, Belgium, Norway, Turkey, Hungary, Finland, Poland, Japan, Czech Republic, Uzbekistan, and others. Delegations from 20 Russian regions visited the forum as speakers and visitors: from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Khanty-Mansiysk and Barnaul, Nizhny Novgorod and Khabarovsk, Perm and Kemerovo, Tomsk and Obninsk, Krasnodar and Novosibirsk, Kurgan and Yaroslavl, Cheboksary and Volgograd, Kazan and Saratov, Ryazan and Ufa.

The EOF 2021 scientific programmewas timed to honor the 100th anniversary of the Priorov Central Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics and the 100th anniversary of the birth of G.A. Ilizarov to mark their outstanding role in the development of trauma and orthopedic scientific school in the Eurasia. 504 reports by 427 speakers were presented at the Forum venue; 28% of the hosts presented online. The speaker lineup at the Forum included Doctors and Candidates of Sciences from Belgium, France, Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, UK, USA, Germany, South Korea, Poland, Japan, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan. The Forum’s scientific programme spanned 15 sections, including both highly specialized ones dedicated to surgical treatment of the hand, foot, shoulder, large joint arthroplasty, and broader sections covering general trends in arthroscopy, traumatology, and orthopedics. The Forum also hosted meetings of international specialist societies: East European Sarcoma Group, AO Spine and AO Trauma, A.S.A.M.I., Russian-Japanese Conference on Spine Surgery. A teleconference with representatives of EPOS, German Knee Society and Gruppo San Donato, Italy, was held.

Particular attention was paid to practical skills and the use of materials and tools. Day Zero, 24 June, was dedicated to orthopedic traumatologists, who could test their practical surgery skills on postmortem materials. It was hosted by the forum partners Arthrex School and Johnson & Johnson.

The programme of the business forum was equally rich. The reports were presented by 119 speakers including representatives of the Russian Ministry of Health, Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, Russian Ministry of Labor, Russian Federal Service for Surveillance in Healthcare, heads of the largest national research medical centers for traumatology and orthopedics, representatives of Russian and foreign pharmaceutical companies, and medical device vendors. The central event of the business agenda — the plenary session — opened with a welcoming speech by Mikhail Murashko, Russian Healthcare Minister. At the meeting, the speeches were held about what awaits traumatology and orthopedics in a few years, and which loads and challenges should clinics, staff and materials be prepared for. The business agenda sections discussed the interaction between domestic and foreign manufacturers of orthopedics and traumatology products, the creation of a medical materials register, and the balance of rights and responsibilities between doctors and patients.

“Interest in the project is increasing every time, and the project itself is evolving. The EOF is not just a conference; it is a multifaceted project bringing together, firstly, a variety of countries and scientific schools, and secondly, the industry of trauma and orthopedic care. The industry is not only a clinic where surgeries are performed or a factory where prosthetics and instruments are made; it is not just a University that trains doctors; all these elements work together towards the common goal of helping patients to move without pain”, Leonid Brizhan, the Executive Secretary of the EOF Organizing Committee, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Head of the N.N. Burdenko Trauma and Orthopedics Center, summarized.

One example of such integration of traumatology and orthopedics institutions into one common project was the signing of a trilateral agreement at the EOF between the heads of the Central Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics under the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ilizarov National Medical Research Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, and the Priorov National Medical Research Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics, setting up scientific and technical collaboration on clinical trials in the field of osseointegrated prosthetics. Thanks to this agreement, patients in Russia will start receiving combined prostheses of a brand new type, which will become extensions of the amputated upper or lower limbs.

Industry symposia on materials, tools, prosthetic and orthopedic products and pharmaceuticals were hosted by partner exhibitors of the EOF. In total, more than 200 manufacturers of medical devices and equipment, hygiene and disinfection products, medical clothing and means of rehabilitation presented their solutions at the EOF exhibition stands. Trainings were also held on ultrasound examination of joints, estimation of foot condition using special devices, demonstration of results of surgeries with the use of exhibitors’ products.

“Most of the visitors we surveyed said that they came to the forum for the sake of sharing experiences, communicating with colleagues, and looking for some creative inspiration. So far, online streaming is yet to beat the benefits of live communication. However, the EOF programme was very intense, and visitors did not have time to watch all the sessions in person; they will be able to watch the records later, which are available to all participants. The EOF has long been more than just a large-scale biennial event. This is an ongoing educational project. For more than a year, we have been operating the EOF Online Club, whose broadcasts and news are subscribed by more than 5,000 professionals in trauma and orthopedics. It has 8 scientific sections and more than 40 partner companies. During the year of the club’s existence, 142 broadcasts were held on a wide variety of traumatology and orthopedics issues, with 400 speakers taking part,” says Pavel Doroshenko, Deputy General Director of Polylog Consulting Group, the Head of the Administrative Directorate of the EOF.

Leonid Brizhan, the EOF Executive Secretary, announced that in the near future, if the epidemiological situation allows, offline education sessions will be started for the EOF Online Club members: “We will be bringing in lecturers on the hottest topics in our area of specialization. The EOF should not be perceived as a large-scale biennial meeting, but as an ongoing educational process.”
