Spotlight on Quality & Safety: How Asia’s top hospitals are using tech to strengthen care

5 July 2023

With the theme of “Embracing change for efficient healthcare”, HMA 2023 will showcase forward-looking hospitals that have transformed their operations to improve efficiency and quality of care.

More often than not, this transformation involves the adoption of digital and smart solutions.

At this year’s HMA 2023 conference, we have put together a session where top hospitals in Asia will share their experiences and case studies with using technology to support patient care.

One example of such technology would be Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems. As healthcare digitalisation picks up pace across the region, an increasing number of hospitals here have begun adopting and implementing EMR.

However, EMR system implementation is an organisation-wide effort that requires proper management to succeed.

Dr. Asawin Puwatanasan, Deputy Hospital Director of Bangkok International Hospital (one of the hospitals in the BDMS network) will be sharing on BDMS’ experience rolling out an integrated EMR system.

The BDMS hospital network is the largest private hospital operator in Thailand, with over 50 hospitals across Thailand and Cambodia. Dr Asawin will share how BDMS successfully built a network wide EMR system, with clear processes for information sharing across the different facilities.

He will also talk about BDMS’ mobile patient application, Health Passport. With this single app, patients can easily view their health history, checkup and lab results from their visits to any of the BDMS network hospitals. This seamless flow of information provides convenience and ease of communication for both patients and BDMS clinicians.

Case studies on AI, CDSS and data mining
Over in India, the Apollo Hospitals group is a leading healthcare network running over 70 hospitals and 370 primary care clinics.

Mr. Santosh Marathe, Regional CEO – Western Region, Apollo Hospital Enterprises Limited, will focus on how technology and AI has helped Apollo Hospitals reduce medical errors.

The group has adopted Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS), as an interface within its Hospital Information System. CDSS delivers alerts to clinicians when it detects any potential issues – such as drug-drug interactions or duplication of drugs – thus reducing the risk of medication prescribing errors.

This is in addition to incident reporting online tools. Mr Marathe will touch on how these tools enable Root Cause Analysis (RCA) – identify the incident and why it happened; and also for Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) – actions to both fix the situation and prevent the incident from happening again in the future. Such tools should be partnered with regular tracer audits and oversight by medical committees and clinical advisory boards.

Last but not least, we will hear from Bumrungrad International Hospital, which is ranked the top hospital in Thailand in 2023 by Newsweek.

Bumrungrad has similarly leveraged on digital technology, including data analytics, to constantly improve its patient care and experience.

In a previous interview with Hospital Management Asia, Bumrungrad’s Chief Patient Experience Officer pointed out how the hospital engages the patient throughout their journey, through Customer Satisfaction Surveys or messaging apps such as WhatsApp, to ensure patients’ needs are met and deliver a personalised, top-notch experience.

At HMA 2023, Mr David Boucher, Bumrungrad’s Chief Partnership Officer, will speak about how the hospital is mining relevant data from patient surveys. Find out how the hospital is extracting useful, timely insights from the huge amount of feedback and data generated daily, and how these insights are used to guide decisions at the hospital.

Join us at HMA 2023 conference this coming September, to hear from leading hospital leaders – such as Dr Asawin, Mr Marathe and Mr Boucher – on the latest technology solutions to improve patient care, and many more.
