Oncoclínicas opens the first Cancer Center in Brazil as an International Collaborating Member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

4 November 2023

Oncoclínicas&Co, the largest cancer group in Latin America, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a teaching hospital affiliated with Harvard Medical School and a leading treatment institution of cancer and oncological research in the world, announce the expansion of their collaboration with the opening of the first Oncoclinics Cancer Center as an International Collaborating Member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Belo Horizonte , located in Minas Gerais, has been selected as the first international center to become a member of the Dana-Farber International Collaboration, demonstrating its commitment to excellence by meeting a wide range of quality and safety standards in adult medical oncology.

Oncoclinics and Dana-Farber are pioneering greater collaboration that involves a mutual commitment to advanced, high-quality, patient-centered oncology care. The objective is to establish a standard of excellence in patient care in the country by continuously upgrading equipment and adopting world-class best practices to provide high specialization, precision medicine and advanced technologies for cancer treatment.

Through international collaboration, the Oncoclinics Cancer Center in Belo Horizonte will have access to important benefits such as select treatment standards and protocols, clinical education and training programs, support for the development of clinical programs, virtual tumor boards where cases are discussed complex oncology, and quality standards, patient safety and quality.

Oncoclínicas' estimated investment in the new Cancer Center is 93 million Brazilian reais, including infrastructure, technology and operations. 83 million Brazilian reals have already been invested and another 10 million Brazilian reals are planned for future phases. The new center will be established in the facilities where the Oncobio and Oncocentro units previously operated. These facilities will be expanded to install the new Oncoclinics Cancer Center in Belo Horizonte and Nova Lima , International Collaborating Member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The opening of cancer centers in Brazil intensifies the agreement signed nine years ago between both institutions for the exchange of experiences, transfer of knowledge and technologies, with a special focus on education and clinical training programs. Oncoclinics oncologists, pharmacists and nurses have already participated in training sessions with Dana-Farber in the United States, in addition to forums, events and clinical case discussions. The collaboration also aims to ensure that Brazil is at the forefront of the fight against cancer by offering patients the best treatment and raising the standard of oncology services in the country.

"The mission of Oncoclínicas in Brazil is to democratize access for all patients. This partnership has been successful because we are two organizations with a single purpose: to care for our patients and offer them the best treatment available at all times. A medical institution focused on patient. What we do every day is provide our clinical and medical team with all the resources so that they can offer the patient the best treatment. I cannot stop paying tribute to our clinical staff because this building without the medical team is just a building "We are beginning our journey. Many more achievements and victories will come," said Bruno Ferrari , founder and CEO of Oncoclínicas&Co.

For Craig Bunnell , director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, this is truly an important moment for both organizations. "Oncoclínicas Cancer Center in Belo Horizonte is the first (outside the United States) to receive the International Collaborating Member designation of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. It is truly an honor to celebrate another milestone in the nine-year partnership with Oncoclínicas, which demonstrated great commitment on the part of this advanced, quality center focused on cancer treatment," he said.

The Oncoclinics Cancer Center in Belo Horizonte will combine patient-centered care with technology and innovation to provide more precise, personalized and less invasive treatments, including initiatives in precision medicine, the continuous search for new treatments and the promotion of a greater access to innovative therapies.

"This important collaboration can influence many patients and families whose lives are affected by a cancer diagnosis. As a Brazilian and a member of Dana-Farber Medical Oncology, it is very gratifying to be part of this team and work with the oncologists at Oncoclinics and assist in its implementation," said Otto Metzger , MD, associate medical director of International Strategic Initiatives and breast medical oncologist at Dana-Farber.

The Cancer Center, which will bear the seal of Dana-Farber International Collaborating Member, expands the business model of Oncoclínicas, which focuses on total oncological care for patients and consists of outpatient clinics integrated into cancer centers, with the objective to provide patients with even more comprehensive and specialized care. An integrated, quality experience in all phases of cancer treatment.

Forecasts from cancer institutes around the world and from Brazil highlight the importance of the initiative, which points to a sharp increase in cancer cases in the next two decades. According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), more than 700,000 new cases of the disease are expected annually between 2023 and 2025. The joint efforts of the giants of the oncology sector are essential to unify scientific knowledge, stop the disease and find a cure.

"Among other collaborative efforts, our multidisciplinary discussions contribute to democratizing oncology care for patients across all of our operations in Brazil. This allows us to offer state-of-the-art protocols and raise the standards of clinical oncology in the country," says Ferrari.

Oncoclinics has also chosen the capital of Minas Gerais to open an advanced unit based on an innovative therapy for the treatment of hematological cancers: Car-T Cell. The therapy uses the patient's cells and genetically modifies them in the laboratory to fight cancer.
