HistoSonics partners with Li Ka Shing Foundation to launch first Histotripsy programme in Hong Kong

29 August 2024

Developing and manufacturing the Edison™ Histotripsy System Histosonics ( www.histosonics.com ) is pleased to announce that the University of Hong Kong has received a generous donation from the Li Ka Shing Foundation to install the first Histotripsy system in Asia. Founded by Mr. Li Ka Shing, the Foundation is a global philanthropic organization with a Hong Kong-focused focus that has provided more than HK$30 billion in funding for education, healthcare services, philanthropy and anti-poverty programs. With the goal of bringing innovative medical technology to Hong Kong, the Foundation has funded the installation of the first two Histotripsy systems in Hong Kong's leading public hospitals, one for the University of Hong Kong and the other for the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is expected to receive the second Histotripsy system, Li's first donation, early next year.

Histotripsy is a new type of focused ultrasound technology that uses high amplitude, very short pulses to generate "bubble clouds" designed to mechanically disrupt and liquefy targeted liver tumors. These bubble clouds form and collapse in microseconds, creating mechanical forces strong enough to destroy tissue at the cellular and subcellular levels in a non-invasive, non-thermal manner. Histotripsy offers patients with liver tumors a promising alternative to avoid certain side effects such as surgical site infection, bleeding and radiation toxicity commonly associated with other treatments such as surgery and radiotherapy. The company believes that the novel mechanism of action of its proprietary technology could bring significant benefits to patients, including allowing for rapid recovery and resorption of treated sites. "It is very interesting to use HistoSonics' Histotripsy system to form microbubbles to treat tumors," said Li, who believes that medical research and innovation can bring hope and economic prospects to Hong Kong.

Liver care experts from the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong recently trained at Histosonics' headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and are expected to begin treating patients as early as this week. "We couldn't be more excited to partner with these two prestigious university hospitals and bring our novel treatment to their patients for the first time in Hong Kong," said Mike Blue, CEO and President of Histosonics. "Unfortunately, Asia accounts for a significant percentage of the world's population suffering from diseases that cause liver tumors, but based on our U.S. deployment experience, we are confident that we can begin to immediately impact the quality of life of many of the most needy patients in the region. We are extremely grateful for the Foundation's very generous donation and Mr. Lee's personal interest in helping patients in Hong Kong." Both Hong Kong-based university hospitals are eligible to enroll patients in Histosonics' promising research and post-market clinical program, BOOMBOX. The program aims to collect data on a wide range of clinical use cases and liver tumor pathology and to monitor the use of histotripsy in all stages of liver disease.

The Edison Histotripsy System is intended for the non-invasive destruction of liver tumors, including unresectable liver tumors, using focused ultrasound with a non-thermal mechanical process.

About Histosonics

Histosonics is a privately held medical device company developing a non-invasive platform and proprietary Sonic Beam Therapy utilizing the science of Histotripsy, a novel mechanism of action that uses focused ultrasound to mechanically disrupt and liquefy unwanted tissue and tumors. The company is currently focused on commercializing the Edison Histotripsy System in the United States and deploying Histosonics' Histotripsy System for the treatment of the liver in select international markets, with the goal of expanding the application of Histotripsy to other organs, including the kidney and pancreas. Histosonics has offices in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
