Advanced Energy Introduces First Fully Integrated, Smart Configurable Capacitor Charger for Cosmetic and Surgical Lasers

21 November 2022

Advanced Energy a global leader in precision power conversion, measurement and control solutions, today introduced the Excelsys FC1500 -- The industry's first capacitor charger and multi-output power supply. FC1500 can provide constant charging power, making medical laser and pulsed light therapy equipment no longer need multiple sets of power supplies.

Traditional laser and pulsed light systems rely on capacitors that are charged at high voltage and then discharged to generate high current pulses. The FC1500, on the other hand, provides a constant 1500 W of power over a full charge voltage range of 200 V to 1000 V, enabling faster capacitor charging when used in low voltage situations in hybrid technology systems, which helps to reduce treatment times. Traditional systems also require multiple power supplies to provide low-voltage AC-DC power for system electronics (such as touch screens, pumps, cooling elements, and other treatments) and high-voltage charging power for high-voltage capacitors. The FC1500 is a fully integrated capacitor charging and AC-DC power supply that meets these power needs in a single unit.

Conor Duffy, vice president of medical at Advanced Energy, said: "The FC1500 uses a unique three-in-one design of capacitor charger, AC-DC power supply and intelligent control to provide medical equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with multiple benefits. These benefits include: 30% reduction in size, Weight reduction, increased reliability, reduced EMI, simplified safety certification and regulatory compliance. In addition, the power supply is highly configurable to ensure an optimal solution for any design.”

For capacitive charging, the FC1500 can operate with high and low capacitive loads, delivering up to 1500 W of constant power (1500 J/s) over a programmable charging voltage range of 0-1000 VDC. Through the self-adjusting control of each pulse, the pulse-to-pulse stability of +/-0.2% repeatability is achieved. At the same time, a programmable power limit enables the system to maximize current draw from the wall outlet. The current sense signal takes reliability to a higher level by accurately calculating the stress on system capacitors.

When used for system power, the FC1500 can provide up to 800 W of rated power and up to 10 independent DC outputs. Field configurable outputs enable "plug and play" to meet specific application needs. Output connections are selectable in series and parallel, allowing designers to choose higher voltages and currents.

The FC1500 integrates intelligent analog and digital control through PMBus, and its storage capacity can speed up time-to-market for medical device manufacturers (OEMs). The internal air-cooled power supply device complies with the requirements of IEC60601-1 (3rd edition) and IEC60601-1-2 (4th edition), and realizes level 4 input surge protection. time) over 900,000 hours.
