ZAP Surgical Systems has expanded its presence in China with the installation of its eighth ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform at Changchun Tumor Hospital in Jilin Province.

The new installation enables Changchun Tumor Hospital to offer stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), a non-invasive treatment for primary and metastatic brain tumours, as well as selected disorders affecting the brain, head and neck. The procedure is typically carried out during a single outpatient visit and does not require incisions or anaesthesia.

Changchun Tumor Hospital joins a growing network of healthcare institutions in China using the ZAP-X platform, including PLA General Hospital (301 Hospital), The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Jinan Junxin Hospital, Peking University International Hospital and Xiong'an Xuanwu Hospital.

The ZAP-X system uses a gyroscopic design to deliver radiation from thousands of potential angles, allowing highly precise targeting of tumours while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue. The approach is intended to improve protection of critical structures such as the brain stem, eyes and optic nerves, while helping preserve cognitive function.

Unlike conventional radiosurgery systems, ZAP-X is designed to operate without the need for a shielded radiation vault. Its self-shielded architecture allows hospitals to install the system in standard clinical environments, reducing infrastructure costs and increasing installation flexibility.

The platform also replaces radioactive cobalt-60 sources with a linear accelerator, removing the need for radioactive source management, replacement and associated security requirements.

The latest installation further strengthens ZAP Surgical's presence in China's growing radiosurgery market and supports wider access to advanced, non-invasive treatment options for patients with brain tumours.
