Washington Hospital Healthcare System first to use TMINI Miniature Robotic System from THINK Surgical

28 September 2023

The Washington Hospital Healthcare System encompasses a 415-bed acute-care facility situated in Fremont, California. Their unwavering commitment lies in addressing the evolving needs and challenges of the dynamic Bay Area community.

In April 2023, THINK Surgical received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its TMINI Miniature Robotic System. Currently, they are actively advancing towards the nationwide commercial launch of this groundbreaking product.

The TMINI system features a wireless robotic handpiece, aiding surgeons in the precise execution of total knee replacement procedures. Employing a CT-based three-dimensional surgical plan, the TMINI robotic handpiece autonomously compensates for surgeon hand movements, ensuring accurate placement of surgical instruments. This user-friendly system replaces numerous manual instruments currently utilized in knee replacement surgeries.

THINK Surgical is unwavering in its commitment to an open implant library, continuously incorporating new implant options into the platform. This open implant approach affords surgeons the freedom to select the most suitable implant for each patient, distinguishing it from existing robotic platforms that exclusively accommodate a single brand of implant.

Larry LaBossiere RN, CEN, CNS, MBA, MSN, Vice President and COO at Washington Hospital Healthcare System, expressed, "THINK Surgical has introduced an exceptional system to the market. While most companies tether their robots to specific implants, THINK's open implant platform allows the TMINI system to support implants from various manufacturers. Additionally, their system is designed for operational efficiency, benefiting both patients and providers. We are pleased to collaborate with another Fremont-based company, providing them the opportunity to demonstrate this technology and gather crucial data."

Dr. Alexander Sah, MD, Medical Co-Director – Institute for Joint Restoration at Washington Hospital, remarked, "Handheld technology represents the next significant leap in robotic surgery, particularly for new users and outpatient surgery centers. We take pride in being pioneers of innovation, delivering outstanding outcomes in knee replacement procedures to our patients."

Stuart Simpson, President and Chief Executive Officer, shared his enthusiasm, stating, "We are thrilled to join forces with Dr. Sah and Washington Hospital. This partnership between a local technology company and a community-based hospital in Fremont will play a pivotal role in making this groundbreaking technology accessible to patients. Together, we aim to extend the reach of this technology to surgeons and patients across the United States and around the globe."
