Varian Launches IntelliBlate in Europe, an Integrated Microwave Ablation Solution for Image-Guided Cancer Therapy
17 July 2025
Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, today announced the European launch of IntelliBlate, its next-generation microwave ablation solution for the treatment of soft tissue tumors. Now CE marked, IntelliBlate represents a critical step in expanding access to an integrated, intuitive, and minimally invasive treatment solution for clinicians and patients throughout Europe.
Designed to provide clinicians with enhanced predictability, increased precision, and greater control, IntelliBlate is the cornerstone of an integrated ecosystem focused on the future of microwave ablation. This therapy device complements Siemens Healthineers' portfolio of software and imaging solutions, including: myAblation Guide for post-procedural planning and confirmation, the myNeedle Laser guidance system that enhances placement with CT and ultrasound for assessment, placement, and monitoring during treatment. With IntelliBlate, the combined offering from Varian and Siemens Healthineers allows clinicians to plan, place, treat, monitor, and confirm ablation therapy in a single environment, simplifying workflow and increasing confidence in targeting and treatment.
IntelliBlate offers the versatility to meet each patient's unique clinical needs. It produces large, spherical ablation zones in a controlled and reproducible manner. Among the new features, the Ximitry probe's thermocouples provide continuous temperature monitoring in and around the ablation zone, allowing clinicians to observe temperature changes in real time and make informed decisions.
The system combines two generators into a single system, making it compact and ergonomic. The intuitive interface, featuring quick setup and pre-programmed ablation zone settings, makes the IntelliBlate an optimized solution for reducing procedural obstacles.
After receiving marketing authorization from the U.S. FDA in 2024, IntelliBlate enters the European market at a time of growing clinical data on thermal ablation. The COLLISION 1 trial , a large international Phase 3 study published in The Lancet Oncology, demonstrated that thermal ablation can be as effective as surgical resection, the current standard, for the treatment of small colorectal liver metastases while resulting in significantly fewer complications, comparable overall survival, and shorter hospital stays for patients.
“The COLLISION trial results mark an important milestone in our thinking about ablation,” said Franck Facchini, president of Interventional Solutions at Varian. “We’re at a point where the clinical data overwhelmingly support the use of thermal ablation as a first-line treatment option, not just for patients who can’t have surgery. IntelliBlate was designed to address this shift in care, combining precision with intelligent software and imaging in a solution that seamlessly integrates into modern cancer care workflows.”
IntelliBlate will be introduced to the European clinical community in September at CIRSE 2025 , the leading European congress for interventional radiology, where Varian and Siemens Healthineers will offer hands-on demonstrations and educational sessions to support training, best practices, and early clinical adoption.
IntelliBlate represents a more targeted and less invasive approach to cancer treatments, offering new options for clinicians and new hope for patients. It reflects Varian's commitment and investment to becoming a leading innovator in interventional solutions and envisioning a world without the fear of cancer. Varian's collaboration with Siemens Healthineers is just beginning. Together, we are committed to continuing to develop an intelligent, integrated approach that connects innovative therapeutic technologies and image-guided solutions.
