UTMB integrates OpenEvidence AI platform into clinical workflows
24 September 2026
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) has partnered with OpenEvidence to provide clinicians with direct access to an AI-powered medical evidence platform through its electronic health record (EHR) system.
The integration went live at UTMB in March and is designed to give physicians and other clinical users access to medical information without requiring them to leave their existing workflows. OpenEvidence is embedded within UTMB’s EHR environment and can be accessed using standard enterprise credentials.
The platform allows clinicians to submit clinical questions in natural language and receive AI-generated responses supported by references to medical literature, clinical guidelines and other sources. The integration is intended to combine the accessibility of generative AI with evidence-based information for clinical decision support.
Since its launch, UTMB has reported an increase in both clinician use and the number of clinical questions submitted through the platform. More than half of UTMB clinicians now use OpenEvidence for clinical decision support.
The integration is being used across UTMB’s healthcare network, which includes hospitals on four campuses and more than 100 clinics across Southeast Texas. This enables clinicians at different locations to access the same AI-supported medical evidence through the organisation’s existing digital environment.
The deployment forms part of UTMB’s broader approach to incorporating artificial intelligence into healthcare delivery. The organisation is working to integrate validated AI tools into clinical and operational processes while maintaining appropriate security, governance and oversight.
UTMB also plans to continue assessing how clinicians use the platform, including adoption levels, user experience and opportunities to improve access to medical evidence at the point of care.
OpenEvidence is an AI platform designed for healthcare professionals, providing responses to clinical questions based on cited medical literature and other medical evidence. The platform is available to verified US clinicians.
