Tampa General Hospital Earns Top Honor for Excellence in Extracorporeal Life Support

3 September 2024

Tampa General Hospital (TGH), a top-tier academic health care system, has achieved a significant milestone by earning the Gold Level Center of Excellence in Life Support designation from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). This is the first time TGH has applied for and received this prestigious recognition.

The ECMO Program at TGH, overseen by Dr. M. Raheel Qureshi, is a critical component of the hospital’s advanced care services. ECMO, or Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, is a life-support technology that temporarily takes over the functions of the heart and lungs when they are not functioning properly.

The machine circulates blood outside the body to a membrane lung, where it adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide, allowing the heart and lungs to rest and heal.

The Gold Level designation from ELSO highlights TGH’s excellence in several areas:

  • Support for ELSO’s Mission: Exemplifying exceptional dedication to ELSO’s objectives and activities.
  • Quality of Patient Care: Implementing the highest standards and evidence-based practices to ensure superior care.
  • Training and Collaboration: Adhering to ELSO guidelines through comprehensive training and collaboration, fostering a supportive environment for patients, families, and staff.

Dr. Qureshi noted that this recognition underscores TGH’s commitment to providing specialized care for complex cases.

Leah Toms, Administrator of Adult Health Services for the ECMO Service Line, expressed pride in the achievement, highlighting that it reflects the hospital’s ongoing dedication to high-quality care and continues to attract patients seeking exceptional treatment.

ELSO, established in 1989, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting professionals and researchers in the field of extracorporeal life support, recognizing hospitals that excel in performance, innovation, and quality.
