Progressive Advancement in X-ray Technology Establishes New Standard in Medical Practice

13 December 2023

At the University of Waterloo, Karim S. Karim has taken the lead in a global initiative aimed at establishing an IEC standard for an innovative X-ray technology. This groundbreaking standard empowers medical professionals to achieve imaging with increased depth and clarity, surpassing the capabilities of traditional X-ray machines. Karim's pioneering work introduces a portable dual-energy X-ray screen seamlessly integrated with conventional X-ray devices.

This integration allows for the differentiation between soft tissue and bone, a capability previously exclusive to CT scans. Within the field of medical devices, the importance of standardized technology cannot be overstated, ensuring reliability and excellence.

Technicians rely on such standards for trustworthy products, while engineers see standardization as a means to enhance consumer confidence and facilitate the commercialization of their products. Despite the intricate and time-consuming nature of the standardization process, the dual-energy X-ray device and its associated standard have been successfully developed under Karim's leadership at the University of Waterloo.
