Paragonix Technologies Announces Milestone with First Use of LIVERguard Preservation System for Pediatric Patients

8 August 2024

Paragonix Technologies has announced a significant milestone with the successful use of their LIVERguard® Donor Liver Preservation System in a pediatric liver transplant.

This landmark procedure was conducted by Dr. Deepak Vikraman at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC, marking the system's first application in a pediatric setting.

Since its launch in 2022, the LIVERguard system has been used in over 300 liver transplant cases across the U.S., with this being the debut in pediatric care.

Recent findings from the GUARDIAN-LIVER global clinical registry indicate that the LIVERguard system significantly reduces post-transplant complications compared to traditional ice storage methods.

The registry examines the impact of various preservation and transportation technologies on liver transplant outcomes.

Additionally, the LIVERguard has facilitated long-distance liver procurements from locations such as Puerto Rico and Hawaii, and enabled organ procurement organizations (OPOs) to manage high-risk donor livers.

The LIVERguard system provides a highly controlled environment for hypothermic liver preservation, featuring real-time digital monitoring throughout the transplant process. This represents a major advancement from traditional methods using ice and coolers, which have been in use for over 50 years.

Paragonix Technologies is excited to see their technology making a difference in pediatric liver transplants. The partnership with Duke University Hospital aligns with the company's mission to improve transplant outcomes and advance healthcare practices.
