Nocira Expands Patent Portfolio for Tailored Migraine Therapies

6 January 2025

Nocira LLC, an Arizona-based medical device company, has secured patents in the United States, Europe, and Japan for innovations that personalise migraine treatments based on individual symptoms. These latest patents expand the company’s intellectual property portfolio, which now includes 14 patents in the U.S. and 47 worldwide, all focused on novel approaches to managing migraines and other neurological conditions.

Migraines are characterised by intense head pain that can vary in location and severity between or even during attacks. This variability suggests differences in the underlying neurological causes, pointing to the need for treatment methods that address these diverse mechanisms. Nocira’s approach aims to deliver rapid and effective relief by targeting multiple pain relief mechanisms and adapting treatments to each patient’s unique migraine patterns.

Existing migraine therapies typically apply a one-size-fits-all approach, which may not account for the differences in pain characteristics or patient responses. This may explain why many current treatments fail to consistently provide complete relief. Nocira’s technology takes a more personalised approach, allowing patients to map their pain intensity and location on a digital head avatar via a touchscreen remote control. The system’s software then uses this data to tailor and adjust the treatment in real time, based on the patient’s response.

The company's patented technology, known as Automated Variable Pulse Insufflation™ (AVPI™), uses gentle air pressure changes delivered through earbuds to stimulate pressure sensors in the ears. These sensors are connected to nerve pathways that influence brain areas responsible for managing pain and other migraine symptoms. The AVPI system adapts its neuromodulation technique during treatment, optimising relief as the therapy progresses.

Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of this non-invasive therapy. Most patients achieved complete pain relief within 20 minutes, with relief lasting at least 24 hours. The trials also reported no significant side effects or adverse events, highlighting the safety and user-friendliness of the device. These outcomes have earned the AVPI device "Breakthrough Device" designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for acute migraine treatment.

Independent headache specialists, including those involved in the clinical trials, have recognised the system’s potential, citing its innovative combination of personalised treatment and multiple pain relief mechanisms. Trial participants have also appreciated the tailored nature of the therapy, describing it as a significant improvement over traditional migraine treatments.

While recent advances in migraine management have improved tolerability and reduced side effects, many patients still struggle to find effective solutions. Nocira’s AVPI platform represents a potential breakthrough in providing faster, more reliable relief for a broader range of patients.

The company is currently raising funds to support applications for FDA approval and CE Mark certification, with plans to commercialise the AVPI platform. Future development will include additional clinical trials and expanding the technology to address other medical conditions.

Nocira’s advancements could significantly improve outcomes for millions of migraine sufferers worldwide, offering a more personalised and adaptable solution to managing this debilitating condition.
