Nineteen Minnesota Hospitals Collaborate to Strengthen Rural Healthcare
28 June 2024
The Headwaters High-Value Network (HVN) was announced today as a new initiative involving 19 independent rural hospitals across Minnesota.
This partnership aims to enhance healthcare services statewide through joint clinical and business efforts. At its core, the Headwaters HVN features a clinically integrated network (CIN) of 19 hospitals and over 50 clinics, serving more than 750,000 Minnesotans.
Additionally, the network will foster operational collaborations to control costs and share best practices.
Networks like the Headwaters HVN and the Rough Rider High-Value Network in North Dakota are innovative models that enable rural hospitals to address the growing challenges of healthcare delivery in rural areas.
By pooling resources, these networks aim to manage rising healthcare costs and improve care coordination through economies of scale.
As collaboration deepens, the Headwaters HVN plans to partner with insurers on value-based insurance products, aiming to improve quality, reduce costs, and enhance the experiences of both patients and providers.
"The members of the Headwaters network believe that supporting the independence of rural hospitals best serves our communities' healthcare needs."
"Our independence is strengthened by our interdependence. Working together enhances our ability to care for our communities."
The network is currently in discussions with other rural hospitals in Minnesota interested in joining and expects to grow.
Expanding Collaboration and Driving Efficiencies
The Headwaters CIN will focus on enhancing care coordination and reducing administrative burdens for providers. A Clinical Integration Committee (CIC), with one medical practitioner from each member hospital, will oversee clinical and quality initiatives.
"By combining the clinical expertise of our members through the Clinical Integration Committee, we ensure access to high-quality care and support the vitality of rural communities."
The Headwaters HVN will also provide shared services to member hospitals to promote operational efficiency, exploring solutions in population health platforms, data analytics, care management, and other areas.
"Everyone involved with Headwaters has a great sense of collaboration, a high 'collaborative IQ,' which will help us sustain independent hospitals long-term," Westman noted. "We understand that working together benefits our communities."
