Nicklaus Children's Hospital Designated ACR Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence

4 September 2023

Nicklaus Children's Hospital has achieved a prestigious designation as a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence® (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The DICOE program signifies the highest standard in medical imaging care and surpasses mere accreditation, acknowledging the hospital's commitment to exceptional imaging practices and diagnostic care. This recognition encompasses a thorough evaluation of the entire medical imaging operation, including its structure, outcomes, professional staff, technology, policies, procedures, and the delivery of superior patient care.

Sheryl Selinsky, Executive Director of Diagnostic Services, emphasized the importance of quality diagnostic imaging, stating, "Quality diagnostic imaging is essential to achieving medical excellence. We take immense pride in our innovative, child-friendly imaging programs, which significantly contribute to our ability to serve the children and families of South Florida and beyond. The Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence designation further solidifies Nicklaus Children's Hospital as the premier institution where the well-being of children takes precedence."

L. Santiago Medina, MD, MPH, Associate Director of Radiology and Director of Neuroradiology, highlighted the hospital's commitment to quality improvement, stating, "The Department of Radiology has been a national leader in quality improvement for more than 20 years and was among the earliest adopters of the rigorous ACR metrics. Our goal is to ensure that every patient receives the best diagnostic study because this has a significant impact on their overall health outcome."

Earning this distinguished status necessitates that facilities hold ACR accreditation in all modalities they offer for which the ACR provides an accreditation program. Additional requirements include active participation in the Dose Index Registry®, the General Radiology Improvement Database, as well as adherence to the principles of Image Wisely® and Image Gently®.

The American College of Radiology, established in 1924, stands as one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. It dedicates its resources to ensuring that imaging and radiation therapy are safe, effective, and accessible for those in need. Its extensive membership of 38,000 includes radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists, and nuclear medicine physicians.
