NBCA Supports Inari Medical?s DEFIANCE Trial for DVT Treatment
16 October 2024
The National Blood Clot Alliance (NBCA), a leading patient advocacy group focused on the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of venous blood clots, has endorsed DEFIANCE, a multinational, prospective randomised controlled trial (RCT) led by Inari Medical. The trial seeks to advance research into Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) treatment.
DEFIANCE will assess the outcomes of symptomatic DVT patients treated with Inari Medical’s ClotTriever System, which performs mechanical thrombectomy, compared to those treated with anticoagulation medication alone.
The trial aims to enrol up to 300 patients across 60 global sites. Its primary focus will be on treatment failure or therapy escalation rates, as well as the severity of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) assessed six months after treatment.
Many DVT survivors, treated with standard anticoagulation therapy, experience lasting complications like PTS, characterised by swelling, difficulty walking, skin changes, and poorly healing wounds.
The trial aims to determine whether mechanical thrombectomy, which removes blood clots, may reduce the risk of developing PTS in certain patients.
The NBCA has highlighted the importance of this trial, emphasising its potential to influence future treatment guidelines.
Inari Medical has expressed its commitment to venous thromboembolism (VTE) patients, with the DEFIANCE trial representing a key step in producing evidence that could shape future clinical practices. The collaboration of trial investigators is expected to provide insights that improve outcomes for patients suffering from DVT.
