Methodist Health System and Acadia Healthcare Start Building New Behavioral Health Facility in Council Bluffs

28 August 2024

Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital and Acadia Healthcare Company held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new advanced behavioral health facility, which will serve western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

The event was held at the future hospital site located at 3620 S. 24th St. in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This ceremony marks the beginning of a joint venture between Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital, part of the Omaha-based Methodist Health System, and Acadia Healthcare.

The new hospital, named Methodist Jennie Edmundson Behavioral Health, is scheduled to open in 2026. It will feature 96 inpatient beds, including 24 designated for children and adolescents, and will offer intensive outpatient services.

Equipped with the latest technology and resources, the facility will be positioned as a center of excellence in behavioral health care. Graham Construction & Engineering is handling the construction, while Stengel Hill Architecture is responsible for the design.

The groundbreaking event included attendance from Council Bluffs Mayor Matt Walsh and other leaders from Methodist Health System and Acadia Healthcare.

Attendees had the opportunity to view architectural plans for the hospital, designed to provide specialized care for acute mental health and substance use disorders.

The new facility is expected to address the significant shortage of behavioral health beds in Iowa and Nebraska and meet the growing demand for behavioral health services in the region.

The hospital represents a major investment in community health and aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of behavioral health care.
