Medtronic Receives FDA Approval for Innovative Asleep Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery

13 August 2024

Medtronic plc has received FDA approval for Asleep Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, which can now be performed under general anesthesia or while the patient is awake.

This approval positions Medtronic as the only company offering both DBS modalities.

Recent studies confirm that Asleep DBS is as effective as Awake DBS in improving motor symptoms for Parkinson's patients.

Additionally, Asleep DBS may offer enhanced safety and efficiency by reducing procedure time.

DBS involves implanting a device similar to a pacemaker that delivers electrical impulses to targeted brain areas.

Medtronic’s Percept™ neurostimulators, equipped with BrainSense™ technology, provide advanced sensing and programming capabilities, allowing for tailored therapy based on detailed brain signal analysis.

Since 1987, Medtronic has provided DBS therapy to over 180,000 people in more than 70 countries, significantly enhancing patient outcomes.

Patients should consult their healthcare providers to choose the most suitable DBS approach for their needs.
