Manipal Hospitals Performs First AI-Powered Injectable Wireless Pacemaker Insertion in Eastern India

Manipal Hospitals, one of India's leading healthcare networks, has successfully implanted an AI-driven, wireless injectable pacemaker for the first time in Eastern India. The procedure was performed at Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria, on a 65-year-old woman.
The pacemaker, known as the Aveir Leadless Pacemaker by Abbott, has already been used in the US and Europe. This device offers a safer and less invasive alternative to traditional pacemakers. Following this, the second and third procedures in the region were also carried out at Medica Superspecialty Hospital (a unit of Manipal Hospitals) and Manipal, Mukundapur.
Weighing just 2.4 grams, the Aveir pacemaker uses nanotechnology to remain securely in the heart, with a lifespan of 20 to 25 years—three times longer than traditional pacemakers. Its non-magnetic design ensures compatibility with airport scanners, MRIs, and high-voltage equipment, allowing patients to maintain normal daily activities.
The Aveir pacemaker has several advantages over older models. It can be upgraded from a single-chamber to a dual-chamber configuration, helping to manage both the right atrium and ventricle. Its Bluetooth-enabled technology allows for remote monitoring and adjustments by specialists, no matter their location.
Unlike previous wireless pacemakers, which could only pace one chamber, the Aveir pacemaker can manage both the atrium and ventricle. It also reduces the risks of complications such as infections, lead dislodgement, and hematomas, common in traditional pacemaker procedures.
Furthermore, the device is injected directly into the right ventricle, eliminating the need for external wires or surgical pockets, which are major causes of infection. This makes it an ideal option for patients with weakened immune systems, skin conditions, or those on dialysis or blood thinners. Its minimally invasive design also reduces scarring, making it a preferred choice for patients concerned about cosmetic outcomes.
With India becoming the third country to adopt the FDA and European-approved injectable pacemaker, this procedure offers a long-term solution for patients, improving their quality of life. However, the procedure can only be performed by trained professionals with the necessary certification.
