Manipal Hospitals Launches New Specialised Day-care Centre For Chemotherapy

14 August 2023

Today, Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road unveiled a specialized day-care center tailored to create a comfortable and secure environment for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The center introduces advanced amenities with the goal of revolutionizing cancer care, offering patients a relaxed treatment setting and direct access to distinguished and experienced medical professionals. Notably, the day-care center features a dedicated cytotoxic drug mixing room, ensuring patient and healthcare worker safety.

Dr. Poonam Patil, Consultant in Medical Oncology, emphasized the design of the day-care center to enhance patient experience and minimize hospital stays. She mentioned, "The center is geared toward providing comprehensive cancer care, including chemotherapy, targeted immunotherapies, and various essential services."

This pioneering day-care center for chemotherapy patients is centered around the innovative concept of enabling patients to return home on the same day of their infusion. Patients have the option to receive their treatment while comfortably seated on private couches or in a shared lounge area, eliminating the need for hospital beds. The center is fully equipped with IV sets, Bard ports, and Power Ports for Chemoport, as well as cooling caps to mitigate hair loss during chemotherapy infusions.

With the capacity to accommodate 50-55 chemotherapy sessions simultaneously, the center's doctors and staff closely monitor patients' vitals. Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, administers 360-370 chemotherapies weekly and approximately 870-900 monthly, depending on treatment urgency. The center's comprehensive and specialized approach prioritizes patient safety and well-being from every angle.

Strategically located near the outpatient department (OPD), the new chemotherapy day-care center reduces patient movement within the hospital premises for treatments and consultations. This proximity minimizes the risk of patients contracting hospital-acquired infections, which can be particularly hazardous for individuals with compromised immune systems due to cancer. Furthermore, the center is equipped with a dedicated cytotoxic drug mixing room designed to prevent contamination and spillage during chemotherapy drug preparation. This controlled environment incorporates specialized safety measures to limit exposure to hazardous substances and the risk of accidental contamination or airborne exposure.

Dr. Amit Rauthan, HOD & Consultant in Medical Oncology at Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, expressed the hospital's commitment to enhancing patient care. "We are dedicated to providing patients with accessible and seamless healthcare experiences in a secure and comfortable environment. Our day-care center boasts cutting-edge facilities for chemotherapy patients, with the inclusion of the specialized mixing room ensuring optimal safety and infection control."

He also expressed his appreciation for the dedicated healthcare professionals who contributed to the realization of the day-care center, highlighting their expertise and dedication to delivering high-quality care.

The day-care center will be led by experienced doctors and supported by a skilled team of nurses and personnel with a wealth of experience in oncology care. Manipal Hospitals remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing cancer care and improving patient outcomes. The launch of this new chemotherapy day-care unit marks a significant stride toward offering compassionate, accessible, and state-of-the-art oncology services to the community.
