KFSHRC Performs World?s First Completely Robotic Heart Transplant

14 September 2024

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, recently achieved a major medical milestone by performing the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant on a 16-year-old patient with end-stage heart failure.

This significant advancement, overcoming the typical challenges of heart transplants, highlights Saudi Arabia’s role as a leader in healthcare innovation and underscores KFSHRC’s dedication to improving patient outcomes and care.

The two-and-a-half-hour procedure was led by Saudi cardiac surgeon Dr. Feras Khaliel, Head of Cardiac Surgery and Director of the Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at KFSHRC.

The surgery followed weeks of detailed preparation, during which the team developed a technique to avoid opening the patient’s chest. To ensure the highest precision and safety, the team practiced the procedure virtually seven times over three consecutive days.

After obtaining approval from both the hospital’s medical committee and the patient’s family, a specialized medical team was assembled, ensuring coordination and smooth communication throughout the operation.

Clear roles were assigned to all team members to prioritize patient safety and the success of the procedure.

This advancement marks a new chapter in heart transplant surgery by replacing traditional chest-opening methods, which often result in lengthy recovery periods and physical limitations for patients.

Robotic technology enables a minimally invasive approach, reducing pain, recovery time, and complications, leading to better patient outcomes and faster recovery.

The success of this surgery is seen as a transformative moment in heart transplantation, demonstrating progress toward Saudi Arabia’s leadership in specialized healthcare.

This achievement also aligns with the broader goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which emphasizes innovation as a key element in improving quality of life.

This robotic heart transplant reflects KFSHRC’s ongoing commitment to medical innovation, enhancing both treatment outcomes and operational efficiency.

As a global leader in robotic organ transplants, the hospital collaborates with international medical institutions to train teams, contributing to the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques and raising the standard of global medical practices.

KFSHRC continues to receive international recognition, ranking first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers in 2024.

It has also been recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East by Brand Finance and was listed among the world’s best hospitals by Newsweek magazine for 2024.
