Hippocratic AI Teams Up to Evaluate World's First Generative AI-Powered Healthcare Provider

1 March 2024

Hippocratic AI has introduced the beta testing phase for the world’s first generative AI-driven healthcare provider, utilizing its safety-focused Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for healthcare purposes. Initially, the emphasis is on voice-based, patient-facing applications that are non-diagnostic. Over 40 provider groups, health systems, and digital health companies, including Memorial Hermann Health System, University of Vermont Health Network, Fraser Health, and Side Health, are collaborating to conduct thorough internal testing to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the products before they are widely available.

Hippocratic AI is leading the development of the industry’s first safety-focused LLM tailored for healthcare. Through its training on healthcare-specific vocabulary and reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) from healthcare professionals, its LLM has demonstrated superior performance in over 100 healthcare certifications compared to GPT-4. While generative AI holds significant promise for improving healthcare access, equity, and outcomes, its application has been largely confined to administrative tasks. Hippocratic AI aims to elevate its impact and significance within the industry.

During the beta testing phase, priority areas identified by partners for evaluation include chronic care management, post-discharge follow-up for specific conditions like congestive heart failure and kidney disease, wellness and social determinants of health surveys, health risk assessments, and pre-operative outreach. Hippocratic AI, along with its partners, intends to expand coverage to include additional conditions and develop new products and workflows over time.

Frontline healthcare professionals such as physicians and nurses will lead the internal testing processes within each partner health system or company. Evaluation criteria will encompass conversational ability, medical accuracy, adherence to scripts, empathy, and listening skills. Testing partners will receive insights into product performance across all participants, evaluation hours per product, specific issues addressed during evaluations, and the resolution of feedback received.

Generative AI represents an unparalleled opportunity to engage patients on a large scale, providing support between provider visits with increased outreach, education, and remote monitoring to effectively manage chronic conditions.
