Google Cloud Announces Availability of Vertex AI Search and Healthcare Data Engine for Healthcare
18 October 2024
Google Cloud has introduced Vertex AI Search for Healthcare and announced new features for its Healthcare Data Engine, which are now available to global allowlist customers.
Vertex AI Search is designed to assist healthcare workers by reducing administrative burdens, while the Healthcare Data Engine enables organizations to create an interoperable data platform, essential for leveraging generative AI in healthcare.
Together, these tools aim to speed up digital transformation, enhancing healthcare systems and improving patient care.
A recent report by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll revealed that healthcare professionals are overwhelmed by administrative tasks. Clinicians spend nearly 28 hours per week, while medical office staff spend 34 hours on tasks such as documentation, scheduling, billing, coding, and inventory management.
Claims staff face a similar workload, spending 36 hours per week on administrative duties. This excessive workload contributes to burnout, with a majority of clinicians, medical staff, and claims workers reporting high levels of stress.
Furthermore, the heavy administrative burden reduces the time healthcare providers can spend with patients, with 80% admitting that it detracts from patient interaction.
Google Cloud's Healthcare Data Engine is now available globally, in regions where the Healthcare API is supported. This platform provides an interoperable, longitudinal record of patient data in FHIR format, a healthcare industry standard, ensuring that AI applications have a robust foundation.
New updates include a pay-as-you-go pricing model, a managed service version for easier deployment, and a graphical data mapping tool called Data Mapper.
Vertex AI Search for Healthcare improves the way healthcare workers access critical information in medical records and documents, overcoming the challenges posed by complex medical vocabulary.
Integrated with Google's MedLM and Gemini 1.5 Flash language models, this tool allows users to search medical data more intelligently and retrieve precise answers, reducing the risk of inaccuracies. It can also provide citations and links to original sources of the information.
Google Cloud’s AI capabilities, including MedLM and Gemini, offer further advantages by allowing healthcare organisations to choose the most appropriate language model for their needs. These models can assist with clinical decision-making, answering medical queries, and streamlining administrative processes.
Gemini's multimodal capabilities also enable it to analyse various types of data, including medical images, clinical notes, and genomic information, to provide a comprehensive view of patient health.
Healthcare providers can now utilise Google Cloud's technologies to enhance patient care while maintaining control over their data, with privacy and security measures ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.
