GE HealthCare Launches Enhanced Venue Family Point-of-Care Ultrasound Systems Featuring AI-Driven Caption Guidance

7 October 2023

GE HealthCare (Nasdaq: GEHC) has introduced a significant enhancement to its Venue Family point-of-care ultrasound systems. These systems will now incorporate Caption Guidance, a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology designed to offer real-time assistance to users in capturing high-quality cardiac images for diagnostic purposes. This integration marks a milestone, as Venue Family becomes the first among GE HealthCare's ultrasound products to feature this scan guidance technology, following the company's acquisition of Caption Health earlier this year. Caption Guidance is an optional add-on feature that introduces new capabilities in point-of-care settings, supporting clinicians in various clinical environments such as emergency departments, critical care units, and anesthesiology practices.

Cardiac ultrasound examinations, which employ sound waves to examine the heart's structure, play a pivotal role in diagnosing heart failure, the most prevalent condition among hospitalized individuals over the age of 65 in the United States. Heart failure is a major contributor to global mortality, with millions of deaths occurring annually. The AI-powered Caption Guidance technology offers clinicians step-by-step guidance for acquiring ultrasound images for cardiac assessments with confidence. This technology can prove especially valuable for healthcare providers who may not have extensive experience with ultrasound, addressing training and skill-related barriers to ultrasound utilization. Consequently, it has the potential to facilitate early detection of heart disease signs in at-risk patients, potentially leading to improved clinical outcomes through early intervention to slow disease progression and reduce hospitalizations.

Dietmar Seifriedsberger, Global General Manager of Point of Care and Handheld Ultrasound at GE HealthCare, stated, "Venue Family ultrasound systems are designed to support clinical decision-making at the point of care, including in emergency departments, offering straightforward, rapid, and precise solutions. The integration of Caption Guidance AI-driven software enhances cardiac care and alleviates the workload on sonographers and radiology departments by empowering more clinicians to perform scans and prioritize patients. This AI software is expected to increase the number of clinicians who can proficiently and confidently perform cardiac ultrasound scans, which is particularly valuable in high-demand, accuracy-critical settings like emergency and critical care."

Caption Guidance, integrated into the Venue Family point-of-care ultrasound systems, is currently available in the United States. GE HealthCare has plans to extend this innovative AI technology to other ultrasound systems, including handheld devices, further expanding access to diagnostic care and the use of ultrasound across a range of healthcare settings.

Karley Yoder, Chief Digital Officer of Ultrasound at GE HealthCare, emphasized the transformative potential of Caption Health AI, stating, "We recognize the potential of Caption Health AI in revolutionizing ultrasound access and have worked quickly to deliver on integrating this promising technology to improve patient care. Within a few months of the Caption Health acquisition, we have successfully launched Caption Guidance as a powerful new guidance tool on our Venue Family ultrasound systems, enabling efficient and confident use of ultrasound at the point of care and strengthening our integrated products and solutions. We remain committed to making an impact with this technology and plan to expand its use to maternal, fetal, and pulmonary diseases."

Caption Guidance is a component of the Verisound suite of technologies, formerly known as Ultrasound Digital Solutions. The new Verisound brand unifies GE HealthCare's existing ultrasound AI and digital workflow solutions into a cohesive platform aimed at helping clinicians work more intelligently and efficiently.

GE HealthCare will debut the Venue Family ultrasound systems featuring Caption Guidance and the Verisound brand at the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Scientific Assembly, scheduled for October 9-12 in Philadelphia. Additionally, the company will showcase the new Vscan Air SL, a handheld, wireless ultrasound system designed for swift cardiac and vascular assessments at the point of care.

Caption Guidance and the Verisound brand will also be prominently featured at the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Annual Meeting, taking place from October 13-17 in San Francisco.
