Fresenius Medical Care Study Confirms Enhanced Outcomes in Anaemia Management for Dialysis Patients Using New Software
25 October 2024
Fresenius Medical Care, the world’s top provider of products and services for individuals with kidney disease, has presented new findings from a United States-based, multicenter, randomized controlled trial, showcasing the benefits of a personalised approach to managing anaemia in patients on hemodialysis.
Published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), the study, titled “Effects of Individualised Anaemia Therapy on Haemoglobin Stability,” reveals that using an advanced anaemia therapy assistance software led to improved haemoglobin stability and reduced reliance on erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) among participants.
The approach is powered by a physiology-based mathematical model that tailors treatment recommendations to individual patient needs, with results indicating a 25% improvement in achieving target haemoglobin levels compared to standard care.
This improvement is particularly meaningful, as maintaining stable haemoglobin levels with minimal fluctuations helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, which are common in patients undergoing dialysis.
Conducted by Dr. Doris H. Fuertinger and her team, the trial involved 96 patients across five Fresenius Kidney Care clinics in the U.S. Participants were divided into two groups: one receiving personalised treatment advice via the software, and the other following conventional protocols.
Over a 26-week period, the group receiving personalised care achieved more stable haemoglobin levels, experienced fewer fluctuations, and required 25% less ESA dosage on average. The study further highlighted that haemoglobin variability was significantly reduced in the personalised therapy group, pointing to more consistent patient outcomes.
This trial reflects Fresenius Medical Care’s ongoing commitment to advancing renal care through cloud-based technology and predictive analytics, with a vision to integrate these tools into routine clinical practice.
As healthcare increasingly moves toward personalised treatments, FME’s focus remains on harnessing innovative technologies to enhance patient care and support clinicians in making data-driven decisions.
