Flosonics Medical Partners with BARDA to Develop AI-Enabled Trauma Capability for FloPatch

2 September 2026

Flosonics Medical has entered into a development contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop FloPredict, an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled software enhancement for its FDA-cleared FloPatch device. The programme will extend the use of FloPatch technology into trauma care and mass casualty response.

The contract, awarded through BARDA's Burn and Blast Medical Countermeasures programme, will support the development of a capability to help clinicians detect internal bleeding following traumatic injuries. The technology is intended to strengthen medical response during mass casualty events, including scenarios involving a nuclear detonation.

BARDA has provided initial funding of approximately $15 million, with the contract having a potential total value of up to approximately $70 million if all options are exercised.

FloPatch is a wireless Doppler ultrasound device that provides rapid, non-invasive and real-time assessment of a patient's blood flow and haemodynamic status. The FDA-cleared device is designed to help clinicians assess fluid responsiveness and guide fluid resuscitation. It has been used in more than 13,000 patients across over 30 hospitals in the US, including in sepsis, hypotension and other critical care settings.

Under the collaboration, Flosonics Medical will develop FloPredict, an AI algorithm designed to analyse haemodynamic data collected by FloPatch. If successful, the software could help identify patients at risk of complications from internal haemorrhage who may require urgent medical intervention.

The technology is being developed for trauma and mass casualty environments, where clinicians may have limited time and resources to assess large numbers of injured patients. By providing rapid and objective information on haemodynamic changes, FloPredict could support faster triage and help healthcare teams prioritise treatment.

The programme will build on FloPatch's existing real-time monitoring capabilities and apply its data analysis technology to trauma care. The development aims to identify haemodynamic patterns associated with deterioration from internal bleeding and provide clinicians with earlier information to support treatment decisions.
