Cardinal Health and Children's Hospital Association Announce Second Preventing Youth Suicide Cohort

14 September 2023

Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH), in collaboration with the Children's Hospitals Association (CHA) and the Zero Suicide Institute (ZSI), has officially announced the recipients of the second round of grants for the Preventing Youth Suicide: A Cardinal Health Foundation National Collaborative. These grants, totaling approximately $1.7 million, will offer crucial support to 14 children's hospitals and health systems across the United States, aimed at preventing youth suicide within their respective communities.

Under this collaborative initiative, members will adopt the framework developed by ZSI, with a commitment to restructuring their operations to better address the needs of children at risk of mental health crises. They will also receive comprehensive training and resources to ensure the sustainability of their efforts beyond the grant period. Cardinal Health joined forces with CHA in 2022 to establish the inaugural Preventing Youth Suicide: A Cardinal Health Foundation National Collaborative in response to the alarming youth mental health crisis affecting communities nationwide.

Jessie Cannon, Vice President of Community Relations at Cardinal Health, emphasized the company's dedication to investing in the mental well-being of both its employees and the communities it serves. Cannon stated, "We're proud to continue supporting the critical work undertaken by CHA, ZSI, and the children's hospitals to combat youth suicide. We believe that this program will have a lasting positive impact in the communities it funds."

Since 2020, Cardinal Health has channeled $5.4 million into more than 47 hospitals and health systems across the country to assist in the reduction of mental health crises. After the two-year grant period concludes in 2024, CHA remains committed to sustaining the efforts of the Collaborative. Behavioral health, including suicide prevention, is a top priority within the Association's quality and improvement agenda.

Amy Wimpey Knight, President of CHA, highlighted the role of children's hospitals and health systems in enhancing the mental, emotional, and behavioral health of young individuals. Knight stated, "With around 30 pediatric healthcare organizations now dedicated to strengthening care systems for the recognition, intervention, and treatment of at-risk children and youth through the Preventing Youth Suicide Collaborative, lives will be saved. We are thankful to these hospitals, their community partners, Cardinal Health, and the Zero Suicide Institute for their leadership and partnership with CHA. We are determined to share their valuable work with children's hospitals across the nation."
