Canon Medical Launches Global Initiative to Revolutionize Lung Cancer Screening with Advanced Technology and Mobile Solutions

27 November 2024

Canon Medical Systems Corporation has launched a new global initiative, "Screen for Life. Breathe with Hope.", aimed at improving lung cancer screening, encouraging early detection, and ultimately reducing lung cancer-related deaths. The initiative focuses on leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering global partnerships to support healthcare professionals in overcoming the challenges associated with lung cancer screening.

Lung cancer screening faces several obstacles, including low participation rates, limited access due to economic and geographic factors, and the technical challenge of balancing low radiation exposure with high image quality. Canon Medical is addressing these challenges with its advanced imaging solutions, designed to help healthcare providers deliver more effective screenings.

To raise awareness among high-risk groups, Canon Medical has collaborated on a documentary series, "Rewriting Cancer", produced by BBC StoryWorks. The series highlights the clinical benefits of screening and includes experts who stress the importance of early detection in reducing the risk of death from lung cancer.

In response to the issue of accessibility, Canon Medical is working with medical institutions to launch mobile screening programmes in the US and Europe. By providing mobile units, these programmes reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for screenings, easing the burden on hospital-based CT scanners and staff, and making screenings more accessible to larger populations.

Canon Medical’s advanced imaging technology plays a central role in the “Screen for Life. Breathe with Hope.” initiative. The company’s SilverBeam Filter allows for ultra-low dose imaging without compromising image quality, while its AI-powered reconstruction technology, the Advanced intelligent Clear-IQ Engine (AiCE), produces high-quality, low-noise images crucial for early detection. Additionally, Canon Medical’s INSTINX CT workflow integrates AI-assisted automation to improve efficiency, consistency, and reliability in screening, helping radiology teams manage large volumes of cases.

The initiative also aims to support knowledge sharing and education. Canon Medical is organising webinars and events to connect healthcare professionals worldwide, allowing them to share best practices and discuss common challenges, such as improving access to screening and streamlining workflows.

Canon Medical's President and CEO, Toshio Takiguchi, emphasised the company's commitment to improving public health by providing healthcare professionals with the tools they need to make lung cancer screening more accessible and effective. Through this initiative, Canon Medical aims to contribute to global efforts to reduce lung cancer mortality.
