BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a global leader in medical technology, has announced the expansion of fingertip blood collection and testing technologies in collaboration with Babson Diagnostics, a health care technology company.

This development aims to enhance blood testing accessibility for U.S. health systems and large provider networks, particularly in settings such as urgent care centres, GP surgeries, and other outpatient facilities.

The initiative combines BD's MiniDraw™ Capillary Blood Collection System with Babson's BetterWay technologies. This innovative approach allows diagnostic tests to be conducted using as little as six drops of blood collected from a patient's fingertip. The process provides a less invasive alternative to traditional venipuncture and can be carried out by any trained health care worker, even those without specialist phlebotomy skills.

Blood tests play a crucial role in clinical decision-making, informing approximately 70% of medical decisions. The new capillary blood collection solution is designed to improve access to testing in areas lacking phlebotomy resources, such as underserved communities. Additionally, it addresses common obstacles like needle-related anxiety and logistical challenges, offering a more patient-friendly approach.

This partnership builds on a collaboration between BD and Babson that began in 2016, aiming to advance capillary blood testing methods. The technology has already been introduced in retail environments, such as pharmacies, since May 2024. The latest expansion will make the solution available at outpatient care sites across the United States, further improving access to diagnostic services.

By simplifying blood collection, this partnership seeks to enhance efficiency in health care delivery, reduce delays in testing, and support better health outcomes. It reflects a shared commitment to innovation and the development of patient-centred care solutions.
