BayCare Cancer Institute Begins Construction on Tampa Bay Area's First Proton Therapy Center

18 September 2024

BayCare has begun construction on the Tampa Bay area's first proton therapy center, which will be located at the BayCare Cancer Institute within St. Joseph's Hospital.

The facility is expected to start treating patients in 2025. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by BayCare executives, local healthcare providers, community members, and special guests.

The new proton therapy center will feature advanced technology from Mevion Medical Systems, designed to integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure.

This technology includes a compact, high-precision radiation delivery system and an upright patient positioning system for improved comfort.

Proton therapy uses protons instead of X-rays to target tumors more accurately, reducing radiation exposure to healthy tissues. This method can result in fewer side effects and a lower risk of secondary cancers.

The $33 million investment will be housed within the Fred J. Woods Radiation Therapy Center at St. Joseph's Hospital.

This new center will enhance cancer treatment services across BayCare, complementing existing radiation oncology programs at Morton Plant Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, and Winter Haven Hospital.
