Arthritis & Osteoporosis Consultants of the Carolinas treats first North Carolina patient with SetPoint System for rheumatoid arthritis

30 June 2026

SetPoint Medical has announced the first use of its SetPoint System® in North Carolina in collaboration with Arthritis & Osteoporosis Consultants of the Carolinas (AOCC), the largest independent rheumatology practice in the southeastern United States.

The first patient was referred by Dr Ashley Toci, rheumatologist at AOCC. The procedure marks another step in SetPoint Medical’s efforts to expand access to the SetPoint System, the first and only U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved vagus nerve-mediated neuroimmune modulation therapy for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

The SetPoint System is intended for adults with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis who do not respond to or cannot tolerate biologic or targeted drug therapies. The treatment involves implanting a small device that stimulates the vagus nerve to activate the body's natural anti-inflammatory pathways, offering a non-drug treatment option.

The therapy is now available at AOCC's Midtown and Ballantyne locations in Charlotte. According to the company, the introduction of the technology in North Carolina supports wider access to neuroimmune modulation therapy and provides an alternative treatment option for patients with persistent disease activity despite existing therapies.

The SetPoint System received FDA approval in 2025 and is designed to deliver one minute of daily vagus nerve stimulation to help regulate inflammation. Clinical findings from the pivotal RESET-RA study showed meaningful improvements in disease activity among patients with rheumatoid arthritis, supporting the therapy's potential to address an unmet clinical need.
