The Alliance for Smart Healthcare Excellence has been established to drive the development of smart hospitals through the adoption of advanced technologies, processes, and practices. The Alliance will oversee the Smart Hospital Maturity Model (SHMM), originally created by care.ai, now part of Stryker, with contributions from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME).

The SHMM aims to help healthcare leaders define what constitutes a smart hospital and assess their current position on this journey. The model has been made available through the Alliance to allow hospitals to evaluate their adoption of smart care technologies. The SHMM survey, developed by a national panel of experts in healthcare, management, and technology, consists of 89 questions across three key areas: Humans (patients, clinicians, and support staff), Environments (clinical care spaces), and Processes (workflow optimisation).

The Alliance ensures the SHMM is independent, vendor-neutral, and free from commercial influence, making it a reliable tool for healthcare providers to understand their progress towards smart healthcare.

So far, over 170 hospitals have completed the survey, which is now accessible to any healthcare system looking to assess their technological readiness. Preliminary survey results are being shared at the CHIME Fall Forum in San Diego.

The Alliance is committed to uniting healthcare providers and industry partners to accelerate the adoption of smart care technologies. It will develop resources to support the implementation of these technologies, with the goal of improving care delivery and optimising hospital operations across the country.

The Alliance is also recruiting additional board members and advisors to provide expert guidance, support fundraising efforts, and keep the organisation informed on emerging industry trends.
