Alfred Health Introduces GE HealthCare Software to Improve Hospital Operations

10 December 2024

GE HealthCare has announced that Alfred Health in Melbourne will become the first healthcare provider in the Southern Hemisphere to implement its Command Centre software. The system aims to improve connectivity between hospitals and community services, offering a centralised approach to decision-making through well-integrated data and key personnel collaboration.

The Command Centre software is designed to enhance hospital operations by streamlining patient care coordination. It provides a centralised platform for real-time data integration from electronic medical records and other systems, supporting better situational awareness, communication, and efficiency across hospital networks.

As the home of Australia’s busiest trauma centre and Victoria’s largest Intensive Care Unit, Alfred Health operates 18 statewide services. The implementation of the Command Centre will support these operations by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to optimise capacity and manage the growing demand for complex and remote care services.

The software includes a range of specialised tools, or “tiles,” that process live data to assist healthcare providers in making informed decisions, such as quickly matching patients with appropriate care. These tools aim to improve resource allocation, enhance patient flow, and predict potential bottlenecks or delays, ensuring care delivery is efficient and well-coordinated.

Since its launch in 2016, the Command Centre software has been adopted by more than 300 hospitals across countries including the USA, Canada, the UK, Turkey, and the Netherlands. Its use has been associated with reduced operational costs and shorter patient stays, demonstrating its potential to support both patient care and system-wide efficiency.

Alfred Health's introduction of the software will focus initially on managing capacity, patient flow, and care delivery, utilising predictive insights to streamline operations and enhance service delivery for its growing community.
