AHF: EU should waive patents in case of health crisis

26 April 2023

AIDS Healthcare Foundation supports the European Commission's proposal to authorize the European Union to issue compulsory licenses on patented medical products in the event of public health crises, within the framework a broader overhaul of intellectual property rights across the economic bloc.

“We commend the EU for taking action before another health crisis hit us. Getting bogged down in patent disputes during a pandemic means loss of life: this is completely unacceptable, regardless of objections from big pharma,” said Zoya Shabarova, Europe Bureau Chief of AHF. “However, EU actions should not be limited to compulsory licensing. Waivers of intellectual property rights should be an integral part of a health crisis management toolkit integrated into pharmaceutical legislation, TRIPS overhauls and a future pandemic agreement.”
