Adventhealth, Medline Ink Unique Partnership To Expand Supply Chain Resiliency

10 August 2023

Three years following the emergence of COVID-19 and its subsequent disruptions to the global supply chain, various sectors, including healthcare, continue to grapple with the repercussions of this upheaval. Among these, AdventHealth, akin to other healthcare systems, has undertaken a series of strategic measures to ensure the uninterrupted flow of its supply chain. This concerted effort aims to equip its team members with the resources necessary to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. Initiatives encompass diversifying suppliers, collaborating with multiple manufacturers, intensifying focus on domestic and near-shore production, and partnering with fellow healthcare systems to fortify the resilience of the supply chain. Now, AdventHealth is forging a distinctive alliance with Medline, a preeminent industry player in healthcare supplies manufacturing and distribution across the full spectrum of care. This collaboration seeks to create a comprehensive solution that will amplify the robustness of the supply chain.

Paul Rathbun, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for AdventHealth, emphasized the distinctiveness of this endeavor, stating, "This partnership with Medline transcends the conventional, uniting the diverse strengths of a prominent national health system and an industry collaborator to forge a more tenacious supply chain. This resilience-oriented approach not only enhances patient outcomes but also optimizes cost management. Collaborating with Medline grants access to an extensive logistics network, ensuring resiliency, while empowering AdventHealth to exercise inventory ownership and management."

Rooted in a multi-dimensional partnership, AdventHealth and Medline are capitalizing on their respective capabilities to enhance the robustness of the supply chain, allowing AdventHealth to possess and steer its inventory and distribution strategy. This construct is designed to accommodate future expansion and development. Further advantages for AdventHealth encompass the capacity to leverage Medline's purchasing power for procuring equipment and assets and tap into Medline's distribution network in exigent scenarios. The enduring commitment and investments from both entities will cultivate a collaborative and innovative environment, concurrently addressing risk mitigation and bolstering supply chain capabilities. AdventHealth and Medline are poised to make an even more significant impact by prioritizing a comprehensive, fully integrated partnership that extends beyond considerations of price and volume.

Integral to this collaboration, AdventHealth will persist in utilizing Medline as its primary vendor distributor for medical and surgical supplies across its network, which spans over 50 hospitals and additional care facilities across nine states.

The partnership also encompasses joint development of the AdventHealth Consolidated Service Center (CSC), a 300,000-square-foot facility presently under construction in Central Florida. This center will store supplies for AdventHealth's Florida-based hospitals and care sites, ensuring product availability for patient care. AdventHealth and Medline will jointly manage the CSC, employing a blended staffing approach that integrates team members from both organizations. Additionally, Medline will utilize the adjacent 250,000-square-foot space for non-AdventHealth inventory. The completion of the CSC is anticipated in early 2024.

Jim Abrams, Chief Operating Officer for Medline, affirmed the value of this collaboration, which builds upon their longstanding partnership with AdventHealth. Abrams underscored the comprehensive scope of this alliance, encompassing real estate, construction, distribution, and transportation operations. This united effort aims to develop a harmonious supply chain solution that effectively addresses the future needs of providers and patients. He asserted, "I firmly believe that these steps demonstrate the value and impact of a highly integrated partnership, where we will consistently challenge the limits of supply chain operations and pioneer innovative frameworks for enhancing future supply chain resilience."
