ACCORD and HIPRA Enter into Exclusive Distribution Agreement to Commercialise HIPRA's COVID-19 vaccine (BIMERVAX®) in the United Kingdom

5 August 2023

Accord Healthcare, Ltd. (Accord) and HIPRA have jointly announced an exclusive distribution agreement aimed at commercializing HIPRA's COVID-19 vaccine within the United Kingdom (UK). Developed entirely within the European Union (EU), this vaccine is a bivalent adjuvanted formulation containing a recombinant protein. Receiving UK MHRA authorization on July 31st, 2023, HIPRA's COVID vaccine, known as Bimervax®, has been designated as a booster for active immunization against COVID-19 for individuals aged 16 and above who have previously received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. In a pivotal trial, the immune response elicited by HIPRA's vaccine was assessed in comparison with that generated by the Comirnaty® mRNA vaccine from Pfizer/BioNTech. Subsequent to these findings, both the UK MHRA and EMA determined that the benefits of HIPRA's vaccine outweigh potential risks, leading to their recommendations for marketing authorization within the UK and the broader EU zone, respectively.

Paul Tredwell, Executive Vice President of Accord Healthcare Ltd., expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to collaborate with HIPRA in introducing a recombinant protein-based COVID-19 vaccine to the United Kingdom. This addition further empowers our efforts to counteract the ongoing health threat."

Carles Fàbrega, Managing Director of HIPRA Human Health, echoed this sentiment, saying, "We take immense pride in our collaboration with Accord to bring BIMERVAX® to the United Kingdom. HIPRA's COVID-19 vaccine represents a remarkable achievement as the first human health vaccine conceived, developed, and entirely manufactured in Spain. Our comprehensive infrastructure and capabilities, spanning fundamental research and development to vaccine production, not only strengthen our ability to respond swiftly to future health crises but also bolster Europe's strategic autonomy in the realm of healthcare."

This alliance marks a significant step in addressing the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic and showcases Europe's commitment to fostering self-sufficiency in the field of health.
